Southwestern offers art classes in Curry CountyIndividuals interested in the arts will have a variety of Southwestern Oregon Community College courses to choose from at Curry County locations during Winter Term. Watercolor Basics I, II and III will be offered in Port Orford and Gold Beach. Level I introduces the principles and concepts of watercolor at the beginning level and Level II is a continuation of those studies, also introducing the study of color and brush control. In Level III, introductory principles and concepts are continued, with special attention given to the history of different painting techniques. Course levels must be taken in sequence and are offered weekly from 9 to 11:50 a.m. on Wednesdays or from 6 to 8:50 p.m. on Thursdays at the Southwestern Gold Beach Center. In Port Orford, the class will meet twice weekly for 5 ½ weeks at the Port Orford Senior Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 11:50 a.m. Students can take the classes for credit for $96, or $65 for personal interest. The college also will be offering specialized community education oriented courses for local artists with various interests, including a Portrait Workshop. Students can bring the media of their choice and learn to use proportion, lighting and angles to create an expressive portrait. The one-day workshop is taught by Alexandra Eyer, one of the area’s finest artists, and will meet from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20, at the Southwestern Gold Beach Center. Cost is $30. Curry County students also will have the opportunity to study Japanese Sumie Paining – a traditional painting technique using black ink or subtle watercolors. The quality of the painting lies in the strength of the line, which depends on the artist’s ability to control the brush, shading, colors and composition. Materials will be provided for this one-day workshop, which costs $23. The workshop is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Southwestern Gold Beach Center. Pre-registration is required for all courses. For more information or to register, those interested can call the Southwestern Port Orford Center at (541) 332-3023, Gold Beach Center at (541) 247-2741 or Brookings Center at (541) 469-5017.
