Southwestern offers children’s music classes

It’s never too early to start learning about music, so Southwestern Oregon Community College is offering Circle Time Music classes for children 12 months through 4 years old.

The Circle Time Music curriculum is based on activities children love – singing, chanting rhymes, dancing and playing simple instruments – all with creativity and imagination. The group classes use language, movement, rhythm and melody in a game-like atmosphere. Each child is accompanied by an adult and participates at his or her own ability level. Early childhood experiences with music can enhance brain development, verbal and listening skills, coordination, self esteem, social cooperation and creativity. The classes also prepare children for instrumental music and dance lessons.

Teacher Deborah McAndrew holds a bachelor’s degree in music and K-12 music teaching credential from Humboldt State University and has an extensive background playing the flute.

All classes are scheduled Thursdays throughout Winter Term at St. Monica Catholic Church in Coos Bay. Classes for babies 12 to 24 months are scheduled at 9 a.m., with toddlers 24 to 36 months at 10:30 a.m. and preschoolers 3 to 4 years at 1 p.m.

Deadline to register is Friday, and class size is limited to 10 children and their adult partners. For more information or to register, those interested can call the Southwestern Office of Distance and Community Education at 888-7415 or the First Stop Center at 888-7352.
