Southwestern offers several courses in Coquille Valley

Whether individuals are seeking college credits, would like to take courses for personal enrichment or need to brush up on basic education skills, Southwestern Oregon Community College has Winter Term course opportunities available in Coquille and Myrtle Point locations.

Adult Learning Skills Program courses in Adult Basic Education and English as a Second Language are planned in the Coquille Valley. Adult Basic Education sessions are available from 8:30 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. Tuesday through Friday at Jefferson School in Coquille and from 6:30 to 9:20 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays at Myrtle Crest School in Myrtle Point. This open-entry, open-exit emphasizes skills necessary to pass the five General Education Development tests and to be successful in entry-level employment or college. English as a Second Language is designed for students who are not native English speakers and need to gain communication skills. Classes are scheduled from 6 to 8:50 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays and from 8:30 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday at Jefferson School in Coquille. There is a course fee of $25 for the term, which allows unlimited enrollment in all of Southwestern’s ALSP offerings. For more information, those interested can call Southwestern ALSP at 888-7116.

Those with an interest in painting can enroll in Watercolor Basics I or Watercolor Basics II. Both are offered from 9:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. on Wednesdays at the Coquille Senior Center. The cost for each of these one-credit course totals $96, but students can take the course for personal interest and receive no college credit at a reduced rate.

Southwestern also is offering four mathematics courses in Coquille, including MTH 20 Basic Math, MTH 70 Elementary Algebra, MTH 94 Intermediate Algebra I or MTH 95 Intermediate Algebra II. All are going to be offered from 6 to 9:50 p.m. on Wednesdays at Coquille High School. These four-credit 11-week classes can be taken for credit at full price or for personal interest and no college credit at a reduced rate.

Musicians also will have a chance to explore their art form with MUP 105 Jazz Band, scheduled from 7 to 8:50 p.m. on Mondays at Coquille Middle School. Cost for the one-credit course totals $96, but students can take the course for personal interest for no college credit at a reduced rate.
