Southwestern and Even Start offer services in Coquille

Southwestern Oregon Community College is offering an opportunity for parents of young children to further their education – and improve their parenting skills all at the same time – in Coquille.

By working with the South Coast Even Start and Southwestern, students can brush up on reading, math and writing skills; gain computer and typing skills; work on a GED; or study English as a Second Language. As part of the program, participants also will be able to spend quality time with their children in their classrooms and be involved in a parent group; and also attend parent education classes. The program can help with transportation costs and free childcare is available during class times.

To be involved in the program parents must have a child younger than 8; be interested in working on their own education, including brushing up on basic skills or taking some college classes; spend time in their children’s classrooms and be involved in a parent group; and be eligible for the program.

Winter Term classes currently are in session, but individuals can start any time during the term. Classes are scheduled from 9:30 to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday for parents of infants and toddlers. Parents of preschool students will be scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. All classes are scheduled in Room 11 of Jefferson School, 790 W. 17th St., in Coquille. For more information, those interested can call Lynne Lorenzen at 396-5091 or Kathy Barber at 888-7123.
