Southwestern Community First Aid courses slatedSouthwestern Oregon Community College will be offering a Community First Aid and Safety at three Curry County locations Winter Term, which is set to begin Jan. 8. The course teaches easy-to-learn emergency procedures that prepare individuals to overcome any reluctance to act in emergency situations. Participants will learn to recognize and care for life-threatening respiratory, cardiac and first aid emergencies involving adults and children. The course is scheduled for the following Curry County locations and times: Port Orford City Hall, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20; Pre-registration is required for all courses. For more information or to register, those interested can call the Southwestern Port Orford Center at (541) 332-3023, Gold Beach Center at (541) 247-2741 or Brookings Center at (541) 469-5017. Southwestern Oregon Community College student Jake Meredith was volunteering his time at an information table at the Welcome Expo last week when he entered a drawing at the next-door Bank of America table. He ultimately won the drawing and was awarded a scholarship! Jake, who is finishing his final term of classes this term, plans to transfer to the University of Oregon to continue working toward a bachelor’s degree and pursue a career as a network administrator.
