Southwestern employees impact their communitiesMost colleges and universities tout the importance of community leadership and service, and Southwestern Oregon Community College faculty and staff members practice what they preach according to a recent internal poll. Southwestern employees combine to average 1,264 hours of community service each month for organizations outside the college. The poll was organized by Southwestern President Dr. Judith Hansen, who electronically distributed campus-wide surveys for employees to submit their hours of volunteer service. College employees log hours every month on a variety of efforts from church and religious service to local service organizations such as Rotary and the Lions clubs. Others are involved in chambers of commerce, city government and school boards. Many also devote their time to community and youth oriented activities such as the Boys and Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon, as well as coaching, SMART, Waterfall Clinic, the Prefontaine Memorial Committee, RSVP, theater, dancing and music groups and as volunteer firefighters, among many activities.
