Southwestern plans child care overview in Curry County

Southwestern Oregon Community College is offering a free Overview of Family Child Care class on Thursday, March 1, in the Brookings area.

The two-hour Overview class is given by CARE Connections Child Care Resource and Referral as an introduction to regulated family home child care in Oregon. Completion of the Overview class can begin the registration process and help participants decide whether a registered family child care business could be a good choice for them. In general, child care providers must be registered with the State of Oregon Child Care Division if they care for more than three children in addition to their own. A family home child care business can provide a rewarding opportunity for supplemental family income while allowing a parent to stay home with children.

At the Overview, participants will receive applications for registration, information about applicable rules and regulations and health and safety tips, as well as an introduction to Southwestern’s Food Program, the Department of Human Services child care subsidy programs and child care resource and referral. CARE Connections offers free child care referrals to enrolled child care providers and preschools.

The Overview of Family Child Care class is scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, March 1, at 97829 Shopping Center Ave. in Harbor. Additional Overview classes can be scheduled in Port Orford, Gold Beach, Brookings and Coos Bay by arrangement with CARE Connections Child Care Resource and Referral. To register, those interested can call CARE Connections at (541) 469-9299 or toll-free at (800) 419-1371, ext. 224. For more information about the licensing status of individual child care providers and centers, those interested can contact the Child Care Division at (800) 556-6616.
