Southwestern offers Spanish for medical professionalsSouthwestern Oregon Community College is offering a course Spring Term designed to teach medical professionals to communicate in Spanish with patients and clients. Spanish for Medical Personnel is tailored to meet the needs of medical professionals who have little or no experience speaking Spanish and wish to learn principal words and phrases commonly used in the clinical setting. Topics to be covered include Spanish pronunciation, common salutations and sentences, basic human anatomy in Spanish and common words for medical conditions. Participants also will go over hypothetical settings in the front office, during the consultation/examination, in the laboratory, in the pediatrician’s office, at X-ray and in the hospital. The classes will build upon basic words, phrases and grammatical principles of the Spanish language by using anecdotal and hypothetical settings in the medical environment. Mini-reviews will be incorporated into each of the 11 two-hour sessions. Students will learn new vocabulary and essential phrases each week and homework utilizing real and hypothetical workplace settings will be assigned. Class is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays throughout Spring Term – which starts April 2 – in Stensland Hall, Room 201, on the Southwestern campus in Coos Bay. No prerequisites are required for this one-credit course, which can be audited for a reduced rate. To register, those interested can call the Southwestern Student First Stop at 888-7352.
