Proof auditions set at Southwestern in April

The Southwestern Oregon Community College Theatre Department is planning auditions for the Spring Term production of PROOF, a play by David Auburn.

Auditions are scheduled at 6:30 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, April 2 and 3, at the Hales Center for the Performing Arts. Director Rob Clingan is seeking two females in their 20s, one male in his 20s and another male in his 50s. The production is scheduled to run May 9 through 13 in the Hales Center on the Southwestern campus in Coos Bay.

In the play, 25-year-old Catherine has left a promising academic career to be caregiver for her ailing schizophrenic father, a world-renowned mathematician. After his death, a brilliant proof is found among his hundreds of notebooks of mad ravings. But who is the author? The plot uses romance, mystery and higher math to explore the relationship between genius and insanity. After winning the 2001 Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award, Proof was filmed starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Jake Gyllenhall and Anthony Hopkins.
