Rice University astrophysicist to speak at Southwestern

Southwestern Oregon Community College is planning an astronomy lecture this month by Rice University astrophysicist Dr. Reggie Dufour.

Dufour will be discussing “Origins of the Universe and the Structure of the Solar System” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 10, at Eden Hall on the Southwestern campus in Coos Bay. Dufour has logged time on most of the large telescopes in the United States, including the Hubble Space Telescope.

The focus of Dufour’s lecture will be on basic astronomy. Dufour is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Rice University, and holds a Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of Wisconsin. He is a member of the American Astronomical Society and the International Astronomical Union and has served on scientific advisory committees for NASA.
