Southwestern student earns service leadership award

Southwestern Oregon Community College student Steven Smith was awarded the Oregon Campus Compact Community Leadership through Service Award at the regular Board of Education meeting on Monday night.

College computer science instructor Dave Fedukowski nominated Smith for the award, and also presented it to him Monday. Smith caught the eye of Fedukowski and other students by taking the lead in designing the College’s holiday light display for the Shore Acres Holiday Lights Show last winter. Smith played a role in every stage of the project, Fedukowski said, adding that he put more time and energy into the project than typically is required of a class final.

“Steven essentially spearheaded our Shore Acres service learning project,” Fedukowski said. “We felt like he went far and beyond the parameters for a particular class.”
