‘Provider Appreciation Day’ planned this Friday

The Southwestern Oregon Community College CARE Connections will be leading local efforts to celebrate Provider Appreciation Day on Friday, May 11.

Childcare organizations nationwide have joined to set aside that day to celebrate and recognize the important work that childcare providers do for children, families and employers. Parents, grandparents, public officials and community members are invited to honor childcare providers for their hard work and dedication to children.

It is estimated that of the 21 million children younger than 6 in the United States, 13 million are in childcare at least part-time. An additional 24 million school-age children are in some form of childcare outside of school time. Childcare providers reap great satisfaction and rewards by watching children blossom in their care, but monetary compensation in the field can be limited or unpredictable. They often forgo usual employee benefits to nurture and care for children.

High quality providers obtain additional training and education, without raises in pay, to meet state regulations. Many are likely to spend portions of their earnings on toys and supplies to meet children’s individual needs and special interests. During the celebration, community businesses are invited to recognize high-quality childcare as a key of their success.
