Student Scholars speak to Southwestern Board

The Southwestern Oregon Community College Board of Education heard from two of Southwestern’s most distinguished scholars Monday night at its regular board meeting.

Southwestern Dean of Students Patty Scott and students Robbie Champion and Katelynn Nordholm addressed the Board as members of Phi Theta Kappa – a nationwide honors society for top academic achievers among community college students – and as Oregon Community College Association Student Scholars.

Champion and Nordholm represented Southwestern at the Student Scholars Awards and Luncheon last month in Salem. The event included a presentation by Gov. Ted Kulongoski and free time to tour the state capitol building and visit with legislators. Each community college in the state sent two student representatives to the annual event, which is part of Community College Month celebrations.

“It’s a nice event to promote community colleges and community achievement, sponsored by the Oregon Community College Association,” Scott said.
