Southwestern sets Tai Chi class in Curry County

Southwestern Oregon Community College is hosting a summer class in Tai Chi – an ancient Chinese form of gentle choreographed movements that is practiced to benefit body, mind and spirit – starting June 23 in Curry County.

The class – led by certified Tai Chi and Chi Kung instructor Saun Stone – is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays throughout the term at South Coast Fitness Center in Harbor.

Tai Chi is a series of slow movements combined with deep breathing that cultivates and builds inner Chi. Benefits include relaxations and stress reduction, increased flexibility, improved mental and physical concentration and focus and improved balance and coordination. Regular practice helps prevent illness and improves healthy longevity.

“My goal is to show people how to access their body’s own natural healing abilities by practicing Tai Chi,” Stone said. “Working with others and helping them to feel better is incredibly rewarding and the most natural thing in the world for me to do.”

Cost of the 11-week class is $34, and participants are asked to wear loose, comfortable clothing. Shoes are optional. For more information, or to register, those interested can call the Southwestern Brookings Center at (541) 469-5017.
