International student puts Southwestern degree to use
Otake first came to the United States to participate in an English language program at Southern Oregon University in Ashland, and quickly began searching for a place to continue studying. She didn’t have to look far before finding Southwestern. “I was looking for a college that has student housing and is located in a small town,” she said. “And I found this place.” Early in her studies at Southwestern, Otake met individuals involved in the Early Childhood Education program and she began volunteering in the Family Center. The experience steered her toward an Associate of Applied Science degree in Early Childhood Education, which she completed this spring. Otake was named Childhood Education and Family Studies Student of the Year for the program this year. “Every time I come here I’m really happy,” she said. “I really love working with children so I want to learn more about them.” In September Otake is scheduled to begin employment at an internationally-oriented preschool in Japan, which hired her because of her educational credentials as well as her international study experience and fluency in the English and Japanese languages. Otake plans to continue work toward a baccalaureate degree in her field. Family Center Director Laurie Potts said Otake has made huge strides as an English speaker, teacher and student since attending Southwestern. “Watching her develop her English abilities, her teaching abilities and her love of the children has just been a joy,” Potts said. “That is what we are here for. She has put her heart and soul into being here and it has paid off.” Press Release Date: June 19, 2008
