Southwestern introduces local students to college life

Going to college is a difficult and stressful process, especially for those who are the first in their families to attend.

But about 28 first-generation college students from Marshfield and North Bend high schools will have the opportunity to break down those barriers this summer with the Upward Bound Summer Academy, a free six-week program where students can get a taste of real college life. The activity is funded through the federal TRIO program, which includes Upward Bound, Educational Talent Search and Student Support Services.

“They get to be college students, as close as we can replicate the experience anyway,” Upward Bound Academic Specialist Neil Winberg said.

During the program, which begins June 23, students spend Sunday nights through Thursday afternoons on the Southwestern campus in Coos Bay. They attend classes, live in the campus residence halls and participate in campus activities.

“They will sleep here and they’ll get their meals here as though they were regular college students,” Upward Bound Academic Specialist Leslie Ryan said.

All students participate in English, mathematics and lab science courses – all offered at a variety of levels – along with a smattering of elective opportunities that include foreign languages, karate, fitness, Medieval history, mythology and art. College and high school instructors teach all classes, and those who complete the program earn two elective credits to apply to their high school graduation requirements. Students also receive training and information about career planning, scholarships, study skills, leadership skills and other key pieces to college success.

Cultural opportunities also are available to those who participate, including two evening culinary presentations at OCCI and a performance and workshops by performing artist Fern Davye. For one week the students will camp at Willow Lake near Ashland, where they will attend the Oregon Shakespeare Festival production of “Othello,” go on a jet boat ride on the Rogue River near Grants Pass and engage in other activities.
