Collaboration leads to new Natural Resources course

Southwestern Oregon Community College is in initial conversations with the Coquille Indian Tribe to launch a new collaborative programming opportunity to build upon the unique environment of the South Coast for future careers.

Southwestern is in the early stages of working with the Coquille Indian Tribe, which has identified need for a Natural Resources program, to begin designing such a program. Course offerings will begin Fall Term with Natural Resources Exploration, which surveys careers in natural resources and offers opportunities for field studies in the Coquille Forest.

As Southwestern and the Coquille Indian Tribe explore this opportunity together, they request ongoing community input about designing the new program. The Natural Resources career pathway would start with high school and students would transition into college at Southwestern to prepare them for careers in Natural Resources or continued education at the university level.

The initial Natural Resources Exploration course is scheduled at 6 p.m. on Wednesdays throughout Fall Term, with the first session meeting on Oct. 1. For more information about Natural Resources program planning and the Fall Term course, those interested can contact Dr. Ann Sylvia at 888-7275 or by e-mail at asylvia@socc.edu.
