Coos Campus

This is a campus the community built. In the late 1950s, a small group of local people led by longshoreman Henry Hansen and the longshore union went to the state’s capitol and lobbied for creation of community colleges. These families worked tirelessly to win local support, and in 1961 we started Oregon’s first public community college campus. Our founding families wanted their children to be able to train for jobs, without having to move away.

Our story in Curry County begins in 1975. That year, the college contracted with an Education Service District for a small offering of classes. Twenty year later, citizens voted to include Curry in the Southwestern Oregon Community College district and the college offered classes in the former library building in Brookings. In 2007, U.S. Borax Company donated 10 acres to the college. After fundraising and much community support, the college opened the new Curry Campus in 2012. Come explore our campus. We’d love to take you on a tour!
